Period Inspiration: Netflix’s ‘Anne With An E’

There’s nothing that states ‘required viewing’ for me than when a new TV series is accompanied by swoon-worthy interiors and new Netflix show ‘Anne with an E’ (a re-boot of the iconic Anne of Green Gables) is a living breathing evocation of everyones favourite modern crafted brands – it’s basically Restoration Hardware meets Farrow and Ball by way of Plain English Kitchens.

Set in the 1900’s the tale is of a vibrant and imaginative orphan mistakenly sent to Green Gables, the remote farm of spinster brother and sister Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert in the bucolic village of Avonlea. The pair wanted a boy orphan to help with the chores, but eager, imaginative, drama-queen Anne makes an impression on the pair and stays on – thriving in the close-knit farming village and brightening up Green Gables.


Chalky paint finishes, restrained palettes and austere but charming room sets make for a Vermeer-esque array of interiors. The Cuthbert farmhouse features expansive rooms – wide varnished floorboards, whitewashed tongue and groove walls, glorious oak dining tables, black spindle chairs and covetable industrial lighting.


Just look at the glorious moss green trims on the farmhouse’s exterior!



The Cuthbert’s farmhouse is a symphony of restrained textures and colour. Chalky paint finishes, homespun linen curtains, glimmers of glass, dull pewter and apothecary jars.
